Nine

A key part of Eric’s plan fell into place when Sam told him of the idea he’d had earlier, when he still had no way of knowing who was attacking the outpost or who was going to win the battle.

“It crossed my mind that we might get out of the building by putting on the uniforms I found in those rooms the soldiers were using as barracks. But I knew that would only work if the guys here were winning. When it looked obvious that they weren’t, I figured wearing that camo pattern would just make us targets. And after I saw how good some of your sharpshooters really were, I’m damned glad we didn’t make that mistake.” Sam was looking at Bart when he said the last.

“I’m glad you didn’t either,” Bart said. “I’d feel pretty bad knowing I’d shot the very folks I came here to get out!”

Eric immediately wanted to see the uniforms upon hearing Sam mention this. When Sam took him to the rooms of the lodge where he’d found them, Eric grinned. “This is perfect! We need to get everyone who will be visible outside into one of these ASAP! I want this place to look just like it did when the convoy left this morning; two guards posted at the front gate, two up there on the top deck standing by on that machine gun, and one or two moving about inside the fence close by those other buildings and looking busy! That’ll be enough to keep them rolling in, at least until the first vehicle reaches the gate. Everyone else will be in position to make sure none of them get out alive before they have time to figure out something’s wrong!”

“I’m glad I remembered to bring them to your attention then,” Sam said. “Most of those duds were half-assed washed in dirty river water and hung up to dry, so I guess they’re good to go, even if they do still stink. I’ll put one on myself if you want me to.”

“You’re like me,” Bart said to Sam. “Too damned old looking to pass for a grunt! They didn’t seem to have any distinguished looking officers on duty, so maybe you and me oughta be part of the hidden ambush team!”

“He’s right,” Eric said. “I’ll get Lenny and Trey up here first. They’re the right age and build to pass for the guards assigned to that gate. It won’t matter as much who is up on the top deck, due to the distance, but at least one of them needs to know how to run an M2.”

“I’ll do it,” Keith volunteered, adding that he’d found helmets in the supply room and that Lenny and Trey should definitely wear them, since the guards posted out front this morning were both wearing lids while on duty. “I’ll put one on too since they’ll see me up there. If I can get Willis as my partner with his rifle, we can do our part to hurt them when the shooting starts.
